Dark Arctic

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

James Small’s Autumn/Winter 2012 collection was my last show at London fashion week so I arrived early, waited outside the freemasons hall in a line full of everyone wearing their best or most outrageous. As soon as I got inside my eyes seemed to wonder to the front row where I scanned the seating arrangement for any celebrity or “special person” that I care about.

When the lights went down and the music started thumping, the models that were dressed in dark and sinister tones started to grace the runway. The collection was full of fabulous fur in grey and black, which created a sense of drama and attitude amongst the different pieces.

The braces and worker-man style trousers were one of my favourite looks from his collection. I loved the way it contrasted with the cardigans and jackets. Though the collection was perhaps a little on the short side, in terms of number of pieces, it was still effective with it’s message: when the mercury dips, the James Small man is ready to take on any conditions, no matter how perilous. Enigmatic? Hell yeah!

What do you think of the James Small collection?

A Parisian Trip

Tuesday, February 28, 2012

Paris really is inspiring. Every time I visit I fall in love all over again. So this time when Mr Allure and I were deciding where to go on our annual Valentines trip we chose Paris.

We stayed in the Latin Quarter which is filled with writers, musicians and bohemians alike, but venture further into the area and you’ll see the true artistic quality. I had only really seen the tip of the Latin Quarter previously, but our location was a place where the food is cheap, espresso is strong and aromatic and the scenery is picturesque in that usual Parisian beauty. We stayed at Hotel des Gobelins, which had such a quaint atmosphere and true Parisian character. Previously I have opted for hotels that are more modern, afraid to find bad plumbing in traditional bathrooms, but the bathroom was so clean and all the appliances new, that this fear was thrown out the window. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect place. Our window faced out onto Boulevard Saint-Marcel and opposite was the cutest little patisserie that sold tarts, macaroons and that irresistible French bread. Oh did we eat!

One of my favourite things to do in Paris is walk along the Left Bank. From the hotel, you can get there after a short walk. The Hotel also has two Metro stations close by with direct links to lots of attractions such as The Eiffel Tower and Bastille as well as Gard du Nord, which made our transfer from train to hotel, so easy.

We spent our second day walking. From the Eiffel Tower to the Arc de Triomphe, down the Champs-Élysées, through all the back roads to Yves Saint Laurent’s Rive Gauche Boutique, then up to Montmartre and Sacre Coeur, walking all the way back down to Notre Dame and the Latin Quarter. We stopped at cafes for espresso and crepes, then as the day turned to evening, we switched to vin rouge. It was the perfect Parisian day, finished off with moule mariniere and frites.

Thank you to Short-Breaks and Jean-Marc at Hotel des Gobelins, who made this trip possible.

Joli Rouge*

Monday, February 27, 2012

When it comes to lipstick, I have always been a MAC girl. But I’m also the kind of girl that likes to try new things, so to carry on my Spring beauty reviews after a lapse of Fashion Week madness, I have tested out Clarins new Joli Rouge colours Baby Pink and Poppy Red – two new shades of Clarins deeply moisturising and colour-rich signature lipstick.

I tend to only wear lipstick in the evening, but this has all changed since being introduced to these little ladies. The first thing I notice about the duo, is how easily they are applied; with other lipsticks I use a brush, but said brush is not needed here. The moisturising element really does make my lips softer. I had to remind myself they were lipstick, and not lip balm!

 Baby Pink

This pink hue is perfect for adding a little more colour in the day. I love the slight sparkle and how understated it is. I did however find that it needed re-applying a little more than the Poppy Red.

Poppy Red

This red has a slight pinkish tone, so I found it to be more girly than the reds I usually go for. Saying that, with a little dab, I was left with a dewy red that had great staying power.

After using the lipsticks, the next day my lips felt oh so soft thanks to the mango butter, a collagen-boosting tripeptide, pro-ceramides and vitamin E, that are all found in the formula. I will definitely be thinking of Clarins for lipsticks from now on.

Pretty Pretty Skulls

Sunday, February 26, 2012

I love me some skulls. They’ve followed me since my grungy teenage years, and they seem to find their way onto my t-shirts, accessories and mostly on my jewellery. I have a cute simple necklace from Marc by Marc Jacobs that I place on top of any outfit and I wear at least three little silver or gold skulls on my wrist daily. But I think my wrist ornaments may need an update. These pastel bracelets bridge together my favourite trend of Spring/Summer 2012 and my love of, well, decaying human heads.

Elkin‘s new pastel bracelets are designed by Eliisa, a fashion stylist who has worked for The Observer, The Independent and The Guardian. She started up the line of jewellery on a break and it is becoming a favourite with models, fashion editors and musicians alike. But regardless of who’s wearing them, these little accessories just made their way onto my Spring wish list. Future collections are inspired by surrealism, bad rock and pop-culture. Looking forward to seeing those!

I especially love this mint coloured one!

They cost £39 for a single and £99 for three paired together, but till the end of February I can offer you lovely readers a 30% discount from the pastel range. All you need to do is enter LADYBONES at the checkout.

Happy shopping!

Ones To Watch Men

Sunday, February 26, 2012

The Ones To Watch Men Autumn/Winter 2012 catwalk show at Vauxhall Fashion Scout was one of my last shows at London Fashion Week and it was the show I was most looking forward to. All the designers that presented where all very different in style yet they all seemed to entice me, one way or another.

TOBERFRANK OF ENGLAND

The lights went up and so did the music and a very alluring male model covered in tattoos strutted down the catwalk. The collection was very cool and effortlessly stylish. Clean cut with straight lines. The show was just as seductive as the collection.

BODYBOUND

A collection I want and need! The collection had a futuristic bad-boy feel about it. I loved the use of the gold and silver in the patterned tank tops and the visors, genius. The gold jacket would be my favourite piece to rock.

JOSEPH TURVEY

Bright whites, cool yellows and hot pinks, which usually isn’t a colour I would personally go for, but the colour fitted perfectly with the style of the collection. Modern chic with traditional tailoring. The jackets with the faces on were so sick and so were the t-shirts.

JULIAN ZIGERLI

The collection To Infinity and Beyond (which played over the track at the show a couple of times) was stylish for being useful and smart with technical high-class pieces that had a sporty touch. There were a few pieces I liked, but it was the knitted pieces that I loved the most.

Big, Bold, Beautiful

Friday, February 24, 2012

As my attention has been predominately focused on fashion over the past week, I wanted to share with you all my favourite looks from London and New York as well as Milan Fashion Week so far.

At Mary Katrantzou Val Garland for MAC created a wing effect with thick strokes of liquid eyeliner, that played on the contours of the eye with angular shapes, leaving the rest of the face minimal in comparison. At Fendi wings were also the main focus, but here Peter Philips for MAC painted them in white and in a much more feminine manner. The end result was understatedly beautiful.

Gucci Westman, Revlon’s Artistic Director, used a lot of Khol as well as liquid liner backstage at Rag & Bone. As a brand Rag & Bone, have a natural aesthetic and image that they design for, so their Autumn/Winter 2012 look followed suit with a grunge feel, keeping the blush to a minimum and the lips nude, focusing mostly on the eyes. At 3.1 Phillip Lim Francelle Daly, a NARS brand ambassador, did the same, however here, different layers of eye liner overlapped to create a more defined and colourful look. False eyelashes were applied for even more fluttery gorgeousness. I cannot wait to try this out!

Pat McGrath took the done-to-death cat flick and gave it a rainbow make-over this season at Anna Sui. Drawing a thick line over the lid with a flick at the end and colouring in with shadow, McGrath created a style that we are sure to see everywhere come Autumn. At Burberry Prorsum Wendy Rowe stayed minimal, with a dewy complexion, but used natural shades of brown to define the area all around the eye. I think this sultry look will be perfect for days where you want to look like you didn’t apply make-up, (when really you did).

Eye popping shades were seen at both Narciso Rodrigues and Prada. Pat McGrath created  a superhero look with eyeshadow if there ever was one. Layers of contrasting colours were applied above and below the eye, as well as over the brow – a strong personality is needed to carry this off. At Narciso Rodrigues colour was painted all the way up to the brow and along the ridge of the nose, with lines also drawn in the crease and on the lid, shaping the eye itself. A more subtle look, but still as playful as the others.

As you can see all focus is on the eyes, some have gone for a sultry look, but what’s popping up all over the place, in Fashion’s main capitals, is bold, colourful and statement making eye make-up. One thing is for certain, come Autumn, I will be more adventurous with my eye make-up. Not that you have to tell me twice to slap on a load of eyeshadow.

‘Visually Arresting’

Friday, February 24, 2012

Leutton Postle‘s Autumn/Winter 2012 catwalk show at Vauxhall Fashion Scout was the show I was most looking forward to. They have a way with texturizing knit, and making it so vibrant and playful, you can’t help but swoon. And that’s exactly what I did, when sitting there, watching the models strut past in their latest collection. They walked to a heavy, tribal influenced beat and the statement pieces marched forward in the form of vests, cardigans, v-neck jumpers, all transformed into the imagination of the design duo, who are not afraid to use unusual materials, such as tinsel and metallic yarn.

The collection was described in the press release as ‘visually arresting’, a phrase beautiful in its depiction, I have to steal it here.

They took the classic smart skirt suit and distorted it with intense patterns and a metallic palette. Other colours they infused into the collection were earthy, putty tones, inky blue, with splashes of orange, yellow and red. Some of the models were veiled in knitted masks of the facial features behind them. The hair was voluminous but tied back in a low ponytail. The bright colours worn on the lips and eyes, only emphasized the kind of woman that they design for. A woman not afraid to make a statement, not afraid to be who she is and also a woman who likes to have fun.

What do you think of Leutton Postle’s lates collection?

GUEST BLOG! Hats Off

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Needless to say I was quite daunted by the prospect of my first peek into the inner workings of London Fashion week.

“What if I’m mocked mercilessly by beautiful, pint-sized fashionistas? What if they throw their countless skinny lattes over me, whilst beating me with luxuriously soft leather Marc Jacobs bags, heavy with iPhones and Swarovski crystals, (or whatever it is in those huge bags) whilst cursing my choice of shoes?”

But thankfully this did not happen. Instead I was ushered into a beautiful room and presented underneath the wonderful painted ceilings were some rather lovely items of clothing. Lovingly made up mannequins dotted around the room show cased the latest designs by Á La Disposition. The collection was a beautiful mixture of Victoriana and origami, with my absolute favourite item chucked in for good measure. The Top Hat. The collection was solemn, with greys and faded lavender, but also had a sense of fun, enter the towering top hats. Each piece could easily be a costume for Helena Bonham Carter in a Tim Burton film.

To explain in properly you have to follow me for a minute in imagining such a scenario, and let’s see if I can paint a picture of the fashion feast my eyes beheld…

So… Charles Dickens bi-centenary fell upon us and to celebrate the occasion Mr. Dickens chose to arise from his leafy grave. A bit bemused by the world around him he saw a sight he felt he recognised. The title Alice in Wonderland befell his weary eyes. He wondered like the rabbit into the dark hole (he later found to be called a ‘Cinema’). He was a bit weirded out by this colourful reliving of the tale, but felt an affinity with the Mad Hatter, he particularly liked his purple top hat, so on leaving the sticky floored hall of moving images behind, he sat down and had a think.

“This world is so far from mine, what will I do to make a name for myself?”

Eureka moment struck, as a pretty, well-groomed lady swished past him. “I’ll be become a dressmaker! Lord knows I could dress this street urchin with better designs than what she appears in now.” So Mr. Dickens took the Mad Hatter as inspiration and pawned his pocket watch, purchased some fabric and forged together a collection of clothes. And the result was some beautifully crafted garments, which comprised of modern fabrics and patterns, mixed with old school elegance and charm. And this is what it looked like…

Unique Details

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Zeynep Tosun also presented her Autumn/Winter 2012 collection at the House of Evolution show. The collection is full of colour, but used in a understanded way. On first sight, you are taken into Zeynep’s imagination, on second you see some really wearable pieces that we have fallen for, very quickly. We spoke briefly with the designer backstage to ask her about her inspirations and creative processes…

What is the main inspiration for the collection?

I always love to use iconic object in my collections in an edgy way, this time the idea came from my childhood. I used to spend most of my time in my grandmother’s house where there were 2 giant marble elephant sculptures, that’s why I love Richard Avedon’s Dovina photo with elephants. It helped me to describe the feeling of the powerful woman who I [wanted to] create. Also I opened a my own shop in Istanbul four months ago and because of that we were designing the interior with my close architect friend. I [was] amazed by so many textures at that time and thought how inspiring it was creating a place. So I united these and came up with an idea of creating a living space for that powerful woman. Huge elephant marble sculptures instead of doors, giant patent leather couches with hand-made details, silver metal grounds, 10 meters height white ceiling with big 3-d flowers. Long, long curtains outside the house which are attached to the inside with giant macramés, with a touch of an east styled house – so basically mixing everything that I like. If had the chance, I would design a place and make the woman as powerful as I could.

What is it you are trying to say with this collection?

It is my fourth collection [so] we can say, I’m trying to build up my brand’s woman and let people see what is it like to wear my designs, specially it is a feeling that I want to create. I always start with creating image of the woman, not with clothes, and I always create what I want to wear, what I’ll be wearing. My style reflects a powerful woman, courageous, unique and eclectic also. With this collection I hope that I have started to make people feel that.

We love all the shapes and patterns you use, when designing your pieces, which comes first the pattern design or the shape of the garment?

Both of them is really important, first I start with the volumes and shapes, but the volumes are not enough – it’s the pattern, details that makes them unique and desirable.

Where can you see your collection being stocked?

Well, it’s a long list. I love lots of cool department and concept stores, but I studied in a french school and used to go to Paris a lot, since then Colette is like my temple, also I’m in love with Opening Ceremony.

Silk x Leather + Colour Panels = Math Collective

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Math Collective’s second show at Vauxhall Fashion Scout had a similar ethos to past creations but mixed things up a bit with pieces of the sport luxe persuasion. I was intrigued to see the show, as designer Shahzad Mohayudin creates with a different sort girl in mind; one that wants luxury pieces that are wearable and easy to piece together for a ‘street’ style.

Featuring colours such as bright coral, navy and grey, Mohayudin manipulated the textures of silk and soft leather into shift dresses, and contemporary pieces. I can expect to see East London’s hip cool kids strutting down Shoreditch in these pieces, just as much as the style-loving missys from W1. How they accessorize them might be the tipping point.

Matt Collective was the last show that I attended this London Fashion Week, and I have to say although I am left feeling exhausted, ill and a bit delusional it was a fantastic experience. Watching the shows, just as much as the spectators, was just so much fun.

This is my favourite piece from the show!

Although Math Collective was my last show, we still have more reviews in the making, so stay tuned.
