Sensationail*

Monday, April 30, 2012

With the influx of gel manicures it was only time until someone would come up with an at-home gel kit. The Nailene Sensationail At Home Gel Manicure System became the number one selling home gel kit in the US in its first week. So having had gels in the salon and loving the benefits of a strong endurance manicure, I tested out the kit to see if it really works just as well at home.

The starter kit contains a Gel Cleanser, Gel Primer, Colour Gel Polish, Gel Base & Top Coat, as well as Manicure Stick, Double Sided Nail Buffer, Lint-Free Wipes and of course the pro 3060 LED Lamp. The kit is meant to last you for 10 complete manicures.

To start I  prepared my nails. I did this by removing any polish, then I filed and buffed the natural nail. Using the Lint-Free Wipe I cleaned the nails with the Gel Cleanser. Then I applied the Gel Primer and let it dry naturally. I applied a thin layer of the Gel Base & Top Coat, trying to avoid the skin and cuticle. You have to cap the natural nail, so I did this by running the polish brush along the tip. Then I cured the nails for 30 seconds as instructed. Here is where you need a steady hand. I applied a thin layer of Colour Gel Polish, trying hard not to touch the skin or cuticle, and caped the nails again with the brush. Make sure you touch up the nails and make them look as perfect as possible, because once you cure the colour, there is not going back. I cured the nails under the LED Lamp for only 60 seconds, before applying another layer and repeating the 60 seconds. I then applied a thin layer of Gel Base & Top Coat and cured for 30 seconds. You then remove the layer of moisture using the Gel Cleanser and Lint-Free Wipes and ta dah, you have high-gloss damage proof nails, however I didn’t quite.

The Gel Cleanser didn’t clean the nails and the manicure was left sticky. When I wiped down the thumb nails half the colour was removed and within an hour my manicure looked messy and bumps had form under the gel, causing it to flake. So I decided to try again and found that the reason the thumb nails were peeling was because the LED Lamp is smaller than those in salons, and the underside of your nail thumb doesn’t get any light. When I repeated the manicure I treated the thumb by itself, so it got as much light as the other nails. I also had to leave the nails in the lamb for double the amount of time it says in the instructions, as the light is not very strong. Instead of using the Gel Cleanser to wipe off the moisture, I used a regular nail varnish and that seemed to work better, as it didn’t leave the nails sticky to collect dust and lint, like before.

After the second go, my nails did look a lot better. Not perfect, but as good a first attempt.

The starter kit costs £85 and is available in Boots. This does seem rather steep, but it works out around £5.77 per manicure compared to the cost of £25 in a salon. The kit is designed to last you for years and so it is more of an investment, but I still think that the cost is rather high. My other thought is that you do need to have a steady hand, as this manicure lasts longer than most and might not always look as professional as the salon equivalent, so if you are not the best at giving yourself a manicure, this is not the product for you. Over all I think the idea is great, of course everyone would like a gel manicure at the fraction of the price, but it’s not. Well not at the beginning.

In May the Sensationail Invincible Gel Polish Colours (£15 each) will be launched so that you can use different colours at home.

What do you think about the Nailene Sensationail? Will you be investing?

Kerastase Cristalliste

Friday, April 27, 2012

On Monday night I was invited down to the Clipso Salon in W1 for a Kerastase Pamper Party. I was welcomed with a glass of pink bubbly and cupcakes. The salon itself, was a quaint little hideaway from the windy, rain-soaked Tottenham Court Road around the corner. I sat at a booth and Elisa explained the new range, Cristalliste, to me while getting information about my hair and we discussed which products would be right. Cristalliste is designed specifically for long hair, so automatically I was intrigued. It wasn’t long until I was relaxing back, getting my hair washed and having potions poured over my head.

As I have fine, long hair, that is coloured half way down, Eliza decided on the Luminous Perfecting Shampoo for Free-Flowing Lightweight hair to bathe the hair. She then used the Luminous Perfecting Conditioner only at the ends to treat it. Even when still wet my hair felt in much better condition. The third product used on my hair was the Lightweight Serum to texturise. I have always shied away from serums as I find they make my hair greasy, sticky or a bit flat, but Elisa used a minimal amount and scrunched just the ends to give a shiny and soft texture to the hair. Once blown-out, into a messy looking, but actually very tamed do, my hair felt in better condition than it has for a long, long time. It’s supple and the ends, which usually look a little dead and very dry, look healthy and smoother.

While my hair was getting a lot of attention, so were my nails, as I had a lovely lady give me a much-needed Essie manicure.

Kerastase also have a little device that can check the hair and also scalp, by magnifying. I have a sensitive scalp, which can be put down to stress, the changing weather and lots of other things, but it means that my shampoos have to be light and not high in chemicals, which the Cristalliste is, it’s free of parabens and colourants. It’s Kerastase’s first haircare range enriched with a ‘liquid light’ complex. Also perfect for hair that can get greasy at the roots, as they are beautifully cleansed, but are left feeling light and oil free. I washed my hair with the range yesterday, applied the serum only at the ends, and left my hair to dry naturally. It feels so great, I can’t stop playing with it.

Portraits

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

As part of our second semester we had to visit various cultural and fashionable locations in London and write just 150 words. The short pieces could be anything we liked and so I decided to let my imagination run wild an create stories about the people I saw (or stalked, depending on how you look at it). Here are some of my favourites.

Portraits

The East-End Artist

In The Book Club, a café that looks more like a school canteen that has only the cool-kids present, a mother and daughter enter. The daughter, a beanie wearing, baggy jeans inhabitant shows her mother to a table.

“This is nice,” says the mother. She has white-cropped hair and is a lot bigger than her daughter in size.

“Yeah, it’s cool,” the daughter replies, looking around sheepishly. She is obviously from around here, her mother’s accent and clothes prove otherwise.

They sit for a silent moment, looking around, in every direction except each others, until the mother asks “you hungry?”

“Starved!”

As they wait for their food to come, the daughter nervously gets out a folder full of print outs and begins to show her mother all her work. She is a talented painter. The mother looks down at the work and back up to her daughter, showing her a proud smile.

The Waitress

It was dreary and disserted, so I found cover in a top-level café. I was the only patron. “I’ll have a latte and a cookie,” I said to the waitress as she began making my coffee automatically. The glazed look in her eye made me realise I was the only customer they have had today. I took my drink and my wrapped chocolate treat and sat on one of the wooden benches near the back, took out my Vanity Fair and began to read, silently observing the waitress.

She stared out into the clouded sky, counting the raindrops to pass the time.  Footsteps in the distance caused her to twitch, her fingers trembled in anticipation of something to do. But no one came. Back to her seat she went, continuing to stare out onto the Shoreditch High Street view. Ten minutes passed, and still no one entered. Boxpark is not the place to venture out to on such a rainy day.

The Girl With The Phillip Lim Bag

I saw it out of the corner of my eye. It’s leather looked so soft, even from a distance. The camel and black 31 Hour Two-Tone Tote that I had been lusting after for months was being paraded through Harvey Nichols by someone so undeserving. Possibly she had stolen it from her mother’s wardrobe, maybe it was a present from a distant relative, either way this blonde girl could not have been one day over the age of 11. She couldn’t possibly know that its simplicity is its beauty, that it should be cradled – not dangled and swung about as the girl was doing. She might not even know who 3.1 Phillip Lim is as a designer.

I followed her with my eyes as she passed me, completely unaware of my jealousy. I wanted to grab the bag and run away. It’s times like this when you realise something’s are just really unfair.

The Man With Great Style

We were making our way into London, taking the Overground straight to Shoreditch High Street. Never before taking this kind of transportation, I was intrigued. Eager. Like a three year old child’s first time on the bus. Continuously looking around, I scanned the commuters’ ensembles, assuming to find them of the hipster variety. I was a little disappointed.

One outfit that I was drawn to looked smart, but comfortable; chic, but a little rough around the edges. The man had red suede boat shoes on, a crisp white shirt tucked into khaki chinos, rolled up to a little above the ankle, with a light navy blazer. I loved the colour blocking and the baggy silhouette it was giving him. To top it off he had given himself a far left parting and slicked back the rest, for a very classic look.

“The outfit’s cool, isn’t it?” I said.

“He looks fat.” Sometimes boys just don’t get it.

The Art Student

Sometimes you just can’t help but stare at people. This girl had that affect on me.

She sat opposite a Roy Lichtenstein titled ‘Whaam!’ and was glancing up and down from her page, scribbling with a pencil. Every few minutes she would have to move her limp brown hair from her face with an annoyed finger.

She looked like a typical art student with her oversized creased shirt, black patent Dr. Marten’s boots, dirty jeans and geek-chic glasses, but something seemed different about her and I couldn’t put my finger on what it was. She had an enigmatic aura that surrounded her, you could tell that she was kind, friendly, personable and I wanted to walk up to her as if we had been friends for years and start talking about Lichtenstein versus Warhol. But suddenly she stood and walked away. I guess that friendship and artistic debate would only ever occur in my head.

The Old Couple

She lent on him for support, and he, his expensive looking walking stick. Each garment they wore oozed wealth and so did their groomed complexions. Each piece was carefully selected, not just for warmth or comfort, but for style and presence. Two things money can certainly help you buy.

Full from their afternoon tea, they walked down Piccadilly in silence, content just to be in each other’s company. Strolling slowing, as if they had nowhere to go, they treated the tourists and Londoners like a passing fly. Not noticing anything around them, they were the only two that existed in their own little world.

After a few paces, he glanced down at her and you could see the love in his eyes as he smiled with the biggest grin. One can only wish to look that happy at such an age.

Easy Peasy Brownies

Monday, April 23, 2012

It’s been a while since I posted about my baking trails and tribulations, so I thought I would share this oh so simple recipe that I always fall back on. You can mix it up a bit by adding special ingredients and toppings of your choosing. Here I added raisins, sultanas and a little clementine zest for a slight tangy kick. But if you want a fool-proof chocolatey explosion, just stick to the basics with the recipe below.

2 x 100g bars of good quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa)
250g unsalted butter at room temp.
200g golden caster sugar
6 level tablespoons of cocoa powder
4 heaped tablespoons self-raising flour
4 eggs
[whatever else you would like to top it with]

To start smash up the dark chocolate and chop the butter into chunks, then put them both into a food processor. Add the caster sugar, cocoa powder, self-raising flour, a pinch of salt and wizz it all together. While its spinning round and round, crack the eggs into the mixture.

Scrunch up some grease-proof/baking paper under a tap, then flatten it out and lay it in a baking tray (approx. 32 x 26cm) and drizzle some olive oil and rub it in.

Use a spatula to spoon out the mixture evenly into the tray. This is where you can get creative. I like to grate the zest of a clementine over the mixture and this time I added raisins etc. You could use nuts, like pecans, dried cherries or leave it plain – tastes great as it is anyway. Put the tray in the oven on the top self for 12-14 mins and that’s it. Easy peasy!

“I Like Love Your Sneakers!”

Friday, April 20, 2012

Nothing excites me more than buying new shoes, and as much as I love brogues and boots etc, a pair of sick sneakers will always do me. Unfortunately being a student makes it pretty hard to satisfy my addiction, but it never hurts to have a look. Here are some shoes that caught my eye.

1. Adidas Originals by Jeremy Scott Hi-Top Sneakers, £133 at Farfetch 2. Rick Owens Leather Bicolour High Sneakers, £598, at Luisaviaroma 3. Raf Simmons Leather High-Top Sneakers, £343, at Autograph 4. Gienchi Studded Hi-Top Sneakers, £219, at Asos Fashion Finder

Body Connection

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

My good friend SIRPAUL has just released his latest video from his new album The Horse. Directed by Andreas Anastasis, the steamy black and white video compliments the electro pop number that features rapper Loco Ninja perfectly. I can’t wait to boogie to the rest of the album with the musician himself when we go to NYC in a few weeks.

I managed to get some saucy stills and I hope they entice you to watch the video.

Guerlain Shine Automatique*

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

Sometimes you don’t want a colour that too bold or drastic, instead you fancy a slight shade of something with a lot of gloss, and this is exactly what Guerlain’s newest lipstick can do for you.

This hydrating lip shine comes in 12 different shades, from oranges, beige, pinks and reds. The new formula uses crystal pigments that allows the lipsticks to be translucent and glossy, not opaque. The fine texture seeps in so that the lips are moisturised to the max.  They can be worn during the day as they can be subtle, but if you apply a few coats, the shine increases and they look even better. They are the perfect lipsticks for a vintage glam look.

If you get excited over products the same way I do, you’ll be playing with the flick applicator for hours.

Extrait De Rose 262

This is the colour I was drawn to most, it’s a fun and girly bright pink. Here I have applied a few layers to show the strong pigments, but if you only apply one, it can look more subtle and add a bit more ‘pop’ to your beauty look.

Rose Pompon 264

This is a more natural pink, it’s quite subtle but really helps to brighten up my face. If I want to look smart, but still have some colour this is the shade I’ll choose.

 Sous Le Vent 200

Sous Le Vent is from the beige family and is extremely natural looking. It helps to achieve a more polished look. If you pair this sophisticated shade with a dark, smokey eye you end up with a really sexy look. I really recommend you try it.

Guerlian Shine Automatique Hydrating Lip Shines cost £24.50 and were released only 2 days ago. Available at Harrods, Debenhams and House of Fraser

The Late Night Chameleon Cafe

Monday, April 16, 2012

A week ago I ventured out east to the high-end fashion emporium that is LN-CC. Hidden away on an unassuming road, down a little alley is the door to the London Store. I had discovered LN-CC a while ago, and had spent many an hour surfing through their website, lusting over the designers and their latest collections, many of which are exclusive to the retailer. So when we arranged a meeting at the appointment only boutique, I was extremely excited, to say the least.

Walking through the industrial doors you are taken to a tranquil arena; dim lights and incense sticks fill the senses, but it is the unique corridor, which has won them many design awards that catches your attention first. Acting as a hub, the corridor has connecting rooms, each one with a different mood, that is home to collections by well-known designers like Maison Martin Margiela, Givency and Yohji Yamamoto, but it is the less known, younger designers that I am most interested in.

The collections in each room changes often as they like to keep the shopping experience as fresh as possible. There were so many pieces that stood out for me, one being the Rick Owens Water Python Giacca Biker Jacket – the visible scales gives a distressed look. I also fell in love with Tim Coppens. He translates traditional tailoring into gorgeous sport luxe pieces. I especially loved the Hybrid Varsity Track Jacket, even if it is meant for men.

Being able to get up close and personal with these designs you can see why the collections are so special. I learnt about Yang Li and the attention to detail in his minimalistic collection. Having been taken under the wing of Raf Simmons, Li not only knows how to create such intricate pieces, but has learnt how to produce a brand – there is something quite enigmatic about the beijing-born designer. Other collections that caught my attention were James Long and his beautiful embellishments and Junya Wantanabe.

As well as stocking some of the ‘coolest’ design talent, LN-CC also has a selective collection of art, culture and design books as well as a vintage music selection. And if that wasn’t enough, there is a small club in the back so that every now and then a select few can boogie underneath the disco ball.

Below is a selection from LN-CC’s 3 features for S/S12…

Isn’t the photography beautiful?

Charlotte Free For Forever 21

Thursday, April 12, 2012

Charlotte Free, the model that had every one grabbing for the pink dye, (and if you know me, you know how obsessed I am!) has been announced as the next face of Forever 21. The cool-girl-next-door previously showed us how to rock Topshop Make-Up, and now with her famous wavy hair and pretty pout she shows us how to style her collection for the American Brand.

I was initially so excited when I found out Forever 21 was coming to the UK, as I always found some great little gems in NYC, and still to this day sware that their jeans are the only pair that look good on me (I hate jeans). However when I visited the Oxford Street store I was disappointed to say the least. This little lookbook and promo video has me all excited again and so I will definitely be making a visit to the Union Square branch in NYC when I go next month – Forever 21 staff with British accents just freaks me out.
