TOMA by Mad Beauty Art Attack Collection

Monday, July 30, 2012

I am all consumed by autumn/winter at the moment. The seasons are changing and the trends shifting, but since the sun has decided to only make an appearance now, I’m feeling a bit of spring/summer’s neon trend. One way of carrying on the season’s colours when you’re not ready to shift yet, is with your nails. I’ve been rocking a neon orange for two weeks now, and really don’t want to take it off. It’s the only reminder that its summer, especially during yesterday’s thunder storms.

TOMA by Mad Beauty released their Art Attack collection which contains 6 über bright shades. As I mentioned I fell in love with Tangerine Nights, a bright neon, orange hue, but I also tested out Magenta Magic, a vibrant shimmery pink. I found the polish itself to be quite thin, so to get the shade I wanted I had to apply at least three coats, sometimes a fourth. And as for lasting, it does chip quite easily, however this could be due to the amount of coats of polish applied. But it is the colours that I keep going back to with this collection, not the varnish.

TOMA Nails can be purchased at Mad Beauty online and cost £7.25. Other colours in the collection include Green Goddess, Blue Movie, Purple Haze and Pink Panther.

Young Thread

Thursday, July 19, 2012

YOUNG THREAD is a new online retailer that holds an exclusive collection of men’s fashion and accessories from many of the world’s most exciting independent brands.

The brands they hold are all small or unknown, giving this online boutique an edge compared to many of the other online retailers for men. The thing I noticed when checking out the site is that the buyers have done a great job in making sure each item fits with the overall style. There isn’t an item on the site that clashes with any other.

Their pieces toy with that British Boy look, but also mix in some Scandinavian and Australian influences.  The site itself is filled with many timeless products that have had a contemporary spin. They will help you achieve an effortlessness, which I feel works best for some men (best to give the illusion you don’t try hard, or not at all).

We act as a platform for young menswear brands, helping to support & introduce them into the consumer market. Our S/S12 collection showcases talent from across the globe, with brands from Paris, Sweden, Columbia, New York, Australia & beyond.

Check out some of my favourite pieces from the site below…

1. Contego The Bellow Tourtoise Sunglasses, £85 2. Hasso Vega Black Rucksack, £119 3. Mercy and Wild Sexy Dyslexics T-Shirt, £35 4. Serge Denimes Smoking Tee, £55 5. Bobbies L’Elegant/Sky Blue Shoes, £100 6. FB Collection Copacabana/Pink Swim Shorts, £125 7. Happy Socks White Polka Dot Socks, £8

Barbie Party

Monday, July 16, 2012

Now you’ve probably noticed the quantity of blog posts have decreased over the past few weeks and I wish I could say that it will go back to normal, but since its dissertation time and I am working on some secret projects which will all be revealed when the time comes, things will be a little slow over the following weeks. But this doesn’t mean I will let the quality of my posts slide. I will still provide you with fashion, art and culture that I think you guys should know about.

This fashion film was made for Vs magazine and really took me back to a simpler time, where the boys would stand on one side of the school hall, us girls at the other and this song would play in the background of the primary school disco. You know the words, so don’t be shy!

Directed by Ellen von Unwerth.
Make-up by Kate Lee and hair by John Ruggiero for Starworks Artists.

The London Designer Sale

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

As you have probably guessed, I like shopping and in particular I love high-fashion. But with a student income it can be difficult to obtain those particular pieces when you haven’t the funds. Which is why I have become accustom to a sample sale every now and then. And my favourite of the London sales has got to be The London Designer Sale.

This pop-up event congregates all around london, I’ve followed it to Brick Lane and Chelsea and back, but this Friday they will be at The Music Rooms in Mayfair. Whats great about this sale is the range of discounts they provide. You can find designers such as Dior, Chloe and Marc Jacobs for 80% off, as well as my favourite find from the last sale, Martin Maison Margiela. I also found smaller alternative brands such as Evil Twin, who I have previously mentioned on Notes On Allure.

Allumer is a jewellery brand I discovered at the sale in Chelsea who have some really interesting pieces. Their hero product has got to be their Allumette Necklaces which are chains with coloured bells. You pick the colour palette of your choice and I chose a white chain with a purple bell which I’ve been wearing daily.

The latest brand they have announced is Bill†Mar. An eclectic brand whose mix of fabrics, prints and textures are what make them different. Even Jessie J is a fan. I really hope to find one of their lace shirts on Friday.

So if you are free on Friday, head down to Mayfair and catch a bargain. Hopefully I’ll see you there.

THE MUSIC ROOMS, 26 SOUTH MOLTON LANE, MAYFAIR, LONDON, W1K 5AB Admission only costs £1 and sale begins at 1pm.

L.O.T.E – Nok Nok Denim Fashion Film

Tuesday, July 10, 2012

Film is one of the latest mediums being manipulated by fashion. It is not simply enough anymore to see static images of the clothes, even if they are incredible. I, for one love to see the clothes with movement, how they stretch or don’t stretch, when you walk, where the creases begin and where they end. Fashion film is in its teenage years and its got a lot of angst right now. I can’t wait to see how it matures.

This film was shot by Kaz Ove and was commissioned by Nok Nok Denim for Spring/Summer 2012.

A continuous exploration of British sub-cultures, drawing inspiration from British vintage and the art world, NOKNOK brings the spirit of freedom and a passion to create modern and sophisticated jeans focusing on fit and quality.

Conceived in London's vibrant, fun and artistic East, NOKNOK is always experimenting with new washes and colours combined with traditional production techniques from Japan, where the jeans are made by local masters. The factories where our jeans are dyed, washed and cut are all located within an hours drive of each other in Okayama.

Making different and attractive products is always in mind when we make NOKNOK Denim, we hope that feeling comes through whenever you wear them.

Q&A With Syron

Thursday, July 5, 2012

Syron is a 19-year-old singer/songwriter, whose future seems as bright as her bleached hair. From my neck of the woods, Bromley, she made her claim to fame when i-D Magazine introduced her as one to watch. She has sung vocals for the likes of Rudimental and performed at Hackney Weekend. If this year she is making a name for herself, next year she’ll be reaping the results. We caught up with the shave-headed beauty to find out a little more.

Who inspires you musically?

I’m inspired by so many people musically, and lots of them for completely different reasons. People like Sade, Floetry, Alicia Keys and  Mary J blidge to Kreayshawn, Azelia banks, Tanya Stephens and Vybez Kartel.

Was being a singer/songwriter always your life aspiration?

Yes, as well as not wanting to do anything else. I’m not really capable of much else, other than dancing. Ha

How was it performing at Hackney Weekend?

Performing at Hackney Weekend was amazing, we all had so much fun on stage and the audience where really going for it, big time.

What is your creative process like when writing a song?

I usually write to beats that producers have sent me rather than in the studio with them. Then I think about what it is I want to say in the song or what it is I want to write about and start to put lines and hooks together. Eventually putting it together into a song structure with a melody.

How would you describe your musical style?

I would describe my music style as garage and house beats with soulful melodies, hip hop influences and lyrics that are relevant to me as a 19-year-old girl in London.

How would you describe your fashion style?

I’d describe my style as fresh prince of Bel Air meets Pat Butcher. Sports clothes and every item of the hugest jewellery possible.

What have you got planed for the rest of the year?

My first single is out in a couple of weeks, with Black Butter so that’s exiting. I’m gonna be doing lots of live performances and as many writing sessions as possible.

UNIF Poison Ivy

Wednesday, July 4, 2012

This is UNIF’s Summer 2012 lookbook, inspired by the 90′s grunge rejects and a certain ‘retro’ movie. Here’s what they had to say about it…

Have you seen Poison Ivy, 1992?s slam bam starring young Drew Barrymore, wherein “A seductive teen befriends an introverted high school student and schemes her way into the lives of her wealthy family.” ?  If you haven’t, killer clothes, no pun intended.  Not to mention it’ll make you think twice about who you befriend, unless you’re blonde, nuts, and ready to kill.  In that case, you need new friends all the time.  We wouldn’t know, we have no friends.  That’s why we sit around watching 20yr old movies.  Here is UNIF’s rendition of  this long forgotten gem.  Breakdown: Blonde girl cool, brunette girl secretly cooler.  Blonde kills brunette’s mom and tries to make blonde babies with brunette’s dad.   Brunette kills blonde.  Conclusion : Girls are bad.
