Midnight in Paris

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

Midnight in Paris, like other Woody Allen films is a film again surrounding a neurotic writer looking for inspiration, however in this film, Allen toys with the past, and paints a beautiful Parisian portrait of the twenties and all the writers and artists that dwelled there.

This movie follows around Gil (Owen Wilson), a man who is full of regrets and wishes he lived in a time long gone. He is a successful scriptwriter for Hollywood but wants to follow his passion of literature and write a great novel. His fiancé (Rachel McAdams) does not give him the support or inspiration he needs or does she agree with his love for all things Parisian. At night he walks alone and as the clock strikes midnight he is picked up in a 1920’s car and transported to glamorous engagements and parties with the likes of Ernest Hemmingway (Corey Store), Scott Fitzgerald (Tom Hiddleston), Gertrude Stein (Kathy Bates) and an art groupie called Adrianna, (Marion Cotillard) who shows him that we all lust over eras of the past, that we dream of golden ages to escape the reality of the present.

Just like all Woody Allen films the ending is poetically ironic, with Gil walking in Paris at night in the rain … “Paris always looks most beautiful in the rain.” A love of Paris and classic literature are not a must to enjoy this film, but watching a film maker revel in his passions and churn out this film, shows that you don’t necessarily have to understand the past to love it.

The film inspired me, hit a nerve, and I feel I was meant to watch this in this turning point of my life. Throughout, Gil regrets not focusing more on his creative side, on giving it all up for easy success. I feel not only is this film about Paris, about love, about the past, this film has a strong sense of future, of what it could possibly behold. It reminded me to stay true to my creative side and although I wish to be successful, it told me not to give up on my passion. Midnight in Paris is an ode to the past and a note on what the future may hold.

Midnight in Paris is released in the UK in October 2011.

Get The Look: Whitney Port!

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

Whitney Port is always showing us how to wear this seasons trends. Working a glamorous casual look daily, but here is how Whitney poshes up …

This look is all about the glowing flawless skin and perfect curls. Here’s how to look as great as Whitney.

Porcelain skin can be a hard thing to achieve, but not with a fabulous foundation and primer. To really make your skin glow use YSL Perfect Touch. It’s very easy to apply as it has a brush applicator, leaving your skin smooth and satin looking with a healthy glow.

YSL Perfect Touch, £32, available from House Of Fraser

To highlight areas for even more perfection, use Topshop Cheek in Prism. To duplicate Whitney’s style apply just under the eyebrows and along the cheekbone to enhance and make your complexion three-dimensional.

Topshop Cheek in Prism, £10, available from Topshop.com

Usually one for natural messy looking curls, Whitney has opted for big loose curls, with a far left parting and lots of volume. The best way to get such a voluptuous fro is to maximise height before you start to define the curls. Volumista from Oribe will help you along. Spray on your wet hair from the roots to tips to get the best affect. It works by swelling each hair shaft.

Oribe Volumista, £28.50, available from Space NK

To finish off this pristine allure coat your lips with a natural pink. A lipstick that will help you get that oh so feminine look is Dolce and Gabbana semi-sheer Shine Lipstick Perla.

Nail Shades for Autumn/Winter 2011*

Sunday, August 14, 2011

My favourite time of year is upon us. The September issues of the magazines are on the stands and full of everything Autumn/Winter related. Although we can’t exactly be rocking around in the heat in the new coats and scarfs yet, we can however indulge in the new colours.

Here I look at some of the Autumn/Winter shades to wear on your fingertips.

Jermyn Street by Nails Inc is a soft brown with a slight grey undertone. A naturally shiny polish, that doesn’t need much maintenance. Smooth to apply, with the right thickness, this shade is great for the season ahead. I applied two coats and after five days there is only a tiny chip. 4/5

Nails Inc Jermyn Street Nail Polish, £11, available at Debenhams

What I really love about Ciaté Nail Paint Pots are the cute little bows on each polish. This varnish was extremely easy to apply as it has a flat brush, which meant that I was less likely to paint my entire fingertip than usual. The colour itself is described as an oyster beige, although I would say it is more of a grey. There is a hint of sparkle to it, although not shiny; two coats and you are left with a matte shade, that feels rather cheap to touch. After five days I found that it chipped quite easily. 2.5/5

Ciaté Nail Paint Pot in Sharp Tailoring, £9.00, available from Ciate.co.uk

One brand I always head to for great colours and lasting, great quality polishes is Nars. Galion is part of their Autumn/Winter 2011 collection. I would describe this colour as a moody grey, a perfect reflection of the dark, edgy clothes that hit the runways. The varnish was smooth to apply and lasted more than five days with no chips and was still glossy. 5/5

Nars Nail Polish in Galion, £13.50, available from Selfridges

Again a perfect colour for the upcoming season, Topshop Nails in Deceptive is a deep purple, that allows you to be a little girly while still being on trend. The varnish itself is glossy, with the right texture and very smooth to touch. After five days there were minimal chips, and some of the shine had faded. 3.5/5

Topshop Nails in Deceptive, £5.00, available from Topshop

We are going to see a lot of this colour in the months ahead and so I wanted to find a great nail colour to compliment the trend. The best I found was Revlon’s Emerald from their new Top Speed Collection that launches in September. It was the easiest to apply from all the polishes I tried and still looked glossy and thick five days on.

Revlon Top Speed in Emerald, £6.49, available in Boots September 2011

Do you find him sexy?

Monday, August 8, 2011

Well I wasn’t expecting this. The Lady really knows how to keep us guessing…

This is the cover for Lady Gaga’s newest single from Born This Way, You and I.

Is it wrong that I am slightly attracted to this addict looking down-and-outer?

I can’t wait to see the video, but I’m slightly upset I’m not blogging about the video for Scheiße…

Did I mention this is The Lady herself!

A Note On The Mid-Twenties Crisis

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

Over the past few weeks I’ve become more and more aware of my age. I’m 22, but this being in your twenties thing, it seems to be baffling people everywhere. This is the decade where we go from children to adults (supposedly), from students to full time 9-5ers (again, supposedly) and the dreaded settling down, kids start to creep ever so slowly (SLOWLY) into the back of our minds. This has even coined the mid-twenties crisis hash tag that’s currently trending on twitter.

So why are we finding it so difficult? Why do we focus so much on it and not just do anything about it? I think it might have something to do with the fact that our generation, those of us that were teens in the noughties, are used to getting everything we want when we want it. Guilty! We live in an age of instant gratitude, where if we want to hear a song, we find it on the Internet, download it illegally and within minutes it’s on our iPods. If we want to see a film, but don’t want to go and pay the ridiculous charge of cinema tickets, we can stream it online, again probably illegally. So when you think about it, we are all guilty of it. But it’s not just this, we were also brought up in Britain; grew up in Britain, so lets face it we have been partying since the tender age of 13 or 14, maybe younger for some of us. So we are used to going out and getting ‘smashed.’ The thought of growing up means we have to stop this constant partying, so why choose that?

This transitional period can cause major conflict within ourselves for reasons such as this, and then there’s the whole ‘what to do with your life.’ Not everyone knows they want to be a director or a writer when their 15. There are the few lucky ones, but most of the people I know have fallen into their positions at work and some make the most of it, others, well they don’t. So they get stuck in the rut of escaping those questions with what we’re good at, getting drunk enough to foget those questions.

I’m not pretending to be all high and mighty, like I can step out of my age group and look down on the rest of you, giving you advice and what not. I’m there too! I’ve taken a ‘fuck I need to do absolutly everything I can, right now’ attitude. I want to write so I started a blog. But I’m so frantic my blog doesn’t have one focus, like they should, its basically a massive online path of consciousness! I blog about anything and everything that interests me, in a magpie sort of way (if I think its shiny, I post it.)  And as well as this blog, I work full time in PR, I copy-write and do internships from home as well. Has this instant graditification given us a false sense of accomplishment? Has it made us think as well as getting everything now, we can do everything we want, right now? For me, I think it may have.

So my long drawn out point is this, if your feeling a bit shit, a bit stuck; maybe you want to move out of your parents house; maybe you want to get a better job; maybe your sick of living on a students wage, don’t fret too much. Your just going through a mid-twenties crisis.

And remember, we’ve got our thirties to look forward to … fuck that!

Holiday Beauty*

Tuesday, August 2, 2011

As I was just on holiday in Cyprus I thought it best to test what the beauty world has to offer in terms of products made for those beach get-a-ways. Products to help us control and perfect our holiday beauty.

It can be very difficult to achieve, or get right, natural looking holiday beauty, especially in a place that reaches over 40 degrees Celsius! There are many products that claim to help us a long the way, but these are a few I picked that helped me try to look gorgeous, when really all I want to do is jump in the pool and shave off my hair it was so hot!

Being a huge fan of the miniature (every product just looks so much more appealing in tiny sized versions of itself) they make perfect travel essentials. The brand that has the perfect selection of take away, holiday products I have come to adore is Mac. Their Sized To Go collection comprises of everything a girl needs to beautify while away – and also maybe a few things, you didn’t know you needed. My favourite product from the collection is the Fix +. A spritzer for the face infused with green tea, cucumber and chamomile to refresh and energise the skin. I have been took this to the beach with me and don’t think I could have lived without it. 5/5 Other products from the collection, such as the Oil Control Lotion and Strobe Cream – products I would normally over look – also make for great companions.

Mac Fix + from Sized To Go Collection, £7, available from Maccosmetics.co.uk

Although Cyprus is the perfect place to relax and catch some rays, those romantic evening meals can be ruined by the constant irritation from biting insects. I have yet to find an insect repellent that works over there, but one product that helps get rid of the swelling and redness is Banalasta’a Instant Scratch, Bite and Sting Rescue. Mostly made up from homegrown eucalyptus radiate, this little Australian product has helped me relieve the pain and itchiness from the little flying things we call mosquitos. This product is also a handy size that fits in any little bag, even if your mobile phone doesn’t. The aromatic smell can be a little over powering, so I recommend applying the oil to your bites outside. 4/5

Banalasta Instant Scratch, Bite and Sting Rescue, £14.95, available from oxygetonline.co.uk

No holiday is complete without lying in the sun and getting a bit of healthy colour to our skin, but no suitcase, ready to embark on a trip to a hot climate is complete without a heafty supply of Aftersun. A moisturiser with Aloe Vera it may be, but this go to holiday product must leave your skin, nourished and silky smooth, without being sticky, greasy or just damn right smelly. My ultimate favourite is Garnier Ambre Solaire Hydrating Milk. Simple, but oh so affective, this product does exactly what it says it does – don’t you just love a product like that! What I love most is that it cools my skin and helps slightly over exposed pink areas turn into a dark golden tan. 5/5

Garnier Solaire Aftersun Skin Soothing Hydrating Milk, £10.20 for 400ml, available at Boots

When on holiday, the other area, apart from our skin that gets a little frazzled is our hair. Sun, wind, and lets not forget sweat, all can make our hair dry and loose its natural body, and don’t forget that humidity that likes to make us look as though we just been shocked with 500 volts.

There are many, many holiday hair survival products, here I have tested some on the market.

My mother taught me young that when you come out the pool or the sea and you are about to lie in the sun and fry, you not only have to put on SPF, but condition your hair. Combing through with conditioner would allow your hair to dry smoothly and not shrivel. Sometimes a spray bottle with beach waves, would be used, but they usually just make your hair smell rather nice and do not do much else, however, Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray left my hair feeling soft, nourished as well as smelling great. My hair can feel very coarse after the sea, but this spray not only nourished it styled also – my hair was volumised and had great texture. I will never leave for the beach without it. 5/5

Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, £19, available from Space NK

The sun can lighten our hair. We all know this. From March onwards, its all about going lighter and during those dark winter months we lust after hair to match. But some of us like the colour we are working with. A product that is meant to safeguard colour is Charles Worthington Takeaways Sun-Shine UV Protection Conditioner. I have to mention that this product did infact condition my hair, very well indeed, but helping to protect from the suns lightening, it did not. As part of the Charles Worthington Takeaways collection, it makes for a great beach product – being of its handy size, but when a product claims to do something and is basically just a fancy conditioner, I am not impressed. Nor is my hair, it is two shades lighter. 2/3

Charles Worthington Takeaways Sun-Shine UV Protection Conditioner, £1.99, available from Boots

Another collection that takes a tiny travel size is Lee Stafford Poker Straight. Although my hair is not straight and I barely bother to use an iron, I was attracted a product from the collection due to its name – Lee Stafford’s Poker Straight Dehumidifier. There are so many products that claim to de-frizz your hair but to actually de-humidify, there aren’t many. So I had to try it. Claiming to be like an umbrella for the hair, I found that I would have still got wet. My hair still became over zealous and big, like it tends to do in such climates as Cyprus, but the frizz was lessened. Just a tad. 2.5/5

Lee Stafford Poker Straight Dehumidifier Spray, £5.89, available from Boots

The New Dragon

Monday, August 1, 2011

Was anyone else slightly terrified by the uncanny resemblance of Cruella De vil and the new Dragon in the Den…

I’m sure Hilary Devey, 53-year-old multi-million business woman is going to be great. If last nights episode was anything to go by, I think she will be straight when she needs to be and extremly kind at other times.

Her outfits just gave me another reason to watch the show.

Get The Look: Mila Kunis!

Monday, August 1, 2011

Mila Kunis caught our attention in That 70’s Show but we really started to pay attention after her performance in Black Swan. And I’m just that little bit obsessed!

Ever since she’s been rocking the red carpet with her smouldering looks. This dark-haired beauty is a style icon for most of us girls who prefer to play on what we already have; accentuating your best features. For Mila, it’s her dark eyes, full lips and glossy hair. We’ve sourced the products that will help you achieve this uber sexy look.

To help draw attention to your eyes colour the bottom of the lashes and the top eyelid with a thick line using Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Zero, with the extra bonus of being 50% moisturiser and is also waterproof.

Mila has a great set of natural lashes. To volumize what you’ve got use NARS Larger Than Life Volumizing Black Mascara.

To really get that sensuous look, paint your eye lids with a light brown shadow like Benefit’s Silky Powder Eye Shadow in Bossy.

To finish off apply a coat of Bobbi Brown’s Crystal Lip Gloss to your nude lips.

Beach Wants NOT Needs

Monday, July 25, 2011

As I’m in Kypros (Cyprus), the homeland, I thought I would share the items I’m lusting after… what I wish I had packed with me.

Missoni Bangkok Reversible Crochet Knit Bandeau Bikini £285. Knitted bikinis always make you feel more secure and well lets just say covered up, even if they are itsy-bitsy.

I love this Sestra Moja dress which would look george thrown over a more resonably priced bikini £375. I would pair this with beaten up black strappy flats and a vintage straw hat.

Vivienne Westwood Anglomania for Melissa Wing Platform Shoe, now £95. Saw these in Brighton last week and I am in LOVE! Would be perfect for a Greek Island as they remind me of the Greek God Hermes.

Ed Sheeran and his two songs are repeated, replayed and repeated again on Xfm but I have to say I’m loving ‘You Need Me, But I Don’t Need You’. I have also downloaded some old EPs and they are the chilled haunting songs I need to help me mellow and relax on the beach. What I want but can’t have, fitting with the theme of this post is his album – released in September. So I have to make due with his ginger voice singing to me through my headphones.

You might think I’m a fool for posting while I’m by the pool over looking Aphrodite’s Rock, but I like to think of it as commitment!

Look out for my next blog on Cypriot culture …

Who Run The World? Girls! Really?

Thursday, July 7, 2011

In the past few weeks Lady Gaga, Adele and Beyonce have been in every magazine and newspaper about being the top three artists of the moment; ruling the music industry. Ok so it may be true, but I wanted to have a think about the men in the industry. Where did they go? Is this phenomenon of women being at the top is just that, a phenomenon? And also, are there three male stars running not far behind?

When looking at the past you could say it was always the men who ruled and women just came up short. If you take the 80′s as an example, the three big names that come to mind are Michael Jackson, Prince, then Madonna – although in my mind it might look a little differently. Could this shift in gender really be a big change, something to pave the way for new generations? Or is it just a marketing ploy? Sex sells. Everyone knows this, so is the fact the three big players are women just a cleverly thought out plan. I mean, when you really think about it, music artists aren’t solo players, they are affected and manipulated by their producers, managers and so on. I can’t confirm that all the people surrounding these three women are men, but I’m sure some of them are. Don’t for a minute think that I’m some woman hater, who is looking for a reason to shoot these talented ladies down. Anyone who knows me knows I am a Little Monster and I also rate Beyonce and Adele. I’m just trying to understand where this change has come from, and also why it is making big news. I’ve read articles about this very subject in publications such as The Observer, Grazia and even The New Yorker. Part of me thinks “hell yeah, we rule this world!” while the other part is a little more sceptical.

So if we just accept this fact and say that women are ruling this moment in music, where did the men go? Are all male acts just bad in comparison? Possibly it’s not that the men are shit, maybe they just can’t keep up. Yeah, I think we can agree on that, no? Before I go into the whole band thing, the first male artist that springs to mind is Kanye West. However much I think he is a massive dick, I can’t deny the boy makes good music. And yes he likes to brand himself as this big artist, who’s genius is so new and different than anything else that it is amazing and blah blah blah, but you got to hand it to him My Twisted Dark Fantasy was probably one of the best albums of 2010. Bringing R n B and Hip Hop together along with some sick appearances from Miss Nicky Minaj (in ‘Monster’ she raps the hell out of Jay Z. Seriously!) and others like Rhianna and M.I.A. But the big difference between Kanye and our three women is that people actually like Gaga, Beyonce and Adele, they look up to them as role models. The only role model Kanye is is a role model for lil shits out there that steal peoples thunder and think they rule the world. Well Beyonce certainly thinks you don’t.

The other man that seems to be having a bit of a ‘thing’ lately also featured on Kayne’s album last year. Bon Iver is a folky, haunting kind of a band, fronted by Justin Vernon. A guy that locks himself in a cabin for a month to get over a break up and decides to write an album. Although a band, most tend to focus on Justin himself, which is why I have mentioned him here. The new self titled album was not written in the Wisconsin cabin, but a studio, and not surprisingly it is still as compelling and dreamy as the first. I’ve also noticed that all the bands that are doing rather well over here, on our side of the pond are male-orientated. Friendly Fires seem to be dancing along to their own beat and last year Two Door Cinema Club where every where I looked, every direction my ears pointed.

The other place in which to find the men in music, I mentioned earlier. A producer used to be a forgotten, silent and hidden puppeteer, but more and more so, they are being recognised and also starting to do their own thing. This can be said about the man behind Tinie Tempah’s number 1 hit ‘Pass Out’. His name is Labrinth and I’m intrigued to hear what he comes out with.

This brings me to my conclusion that most of the ‘good’ men in music are either in bands or are producers and thus get a little less attention, standing in the shadows controlling the over made up puppets. Don’t you just love a good puppet?!
