LIVE Fast & DYE Your Hair

Wednesday, June 13, 2012

Having brown hair for 19 years can most definitely bore a person. So when I visited my beloved New York I felt I had to go a little crazy. So I did the one thing my mom has always told not me not to do, I bleached the hell out of my hair. Not because of that, but I felt like I needed a change. Coloured hair is also one of the things I’m into right now, but it needs to have that pastel look in my opinion and a good way to get this kind of colour, that I’m sure many of you are seeing at the moment, is Manic Panic. Born in N.Y.C but available for to buy here in the U.K at £9.95. A semi-permanent hair colour creme that comes in over 30 different colours.

After I had washed my hair with a deep cleansing shampoo I allowed my hair to dry before applying. Once dry, I applied the Atomic Turquoise Manic Panic all over my hair using a tint brush, then covered hair with cling film for 20 minutes (tub says 30 but I don’t have much hair). Then finally I washed my hair and viola! Caution: wear gloves when applying.

As my hair was white it took to the colour extremely well, but the amazing thing is all you have to do is shampoo your hair a few times – I did it 3 times the night I dyed it, 2 times the day after and then 1 the day after that. It lightened and faded and turned into this pastel colour I have been lusting after for quite sometime now.

Kerastase Cristalliste

Friday, April 27, 2012

On Monday night I was invited down to the Clipso Salon in W1 for a Kerastase Pamper Party. I was welcomed with a glass of pink bubbly and cupcakes. The salon itself, was a quaint little hideaway from the windy, rain-soaked Tottenham Court Road around the corner. I sat at a booth and Elisa explained the new range, Cristalliste, to me while getting information about my hair and we discussed which products would be right. Cristalliste is designed specifically for long hair, so automatically I was intrigued. It wasn’t long until I was relaxing back, getting my hair washed and having potions poured over my head.

As I have fine, long hair, that is coloured half way down, Eliza decided on the Luminous Perfecting Shampoo for Free-Flowing Lightweight hair to bathe the hair. She then used the Luminous Perfecting Conditioner only at the ends to treat it. Even when still wet my hair felt in much better condition. The third product used on my hair was the Lightweight Serum to texturise. I have always shied away from serums as I find they make my hair greasy, sticky or a bit flat, but Elisa used a minimal amount and scrunched just the ends to give a shiny and soft texture to the hair. Once blown-out, into a messy looking, but actually very tamed do, my hair felt in better condition than it has for a long, long time. It’s supple and the ends, which usually look a little dead and very dry, look healthy and smoother.

While my hair was getting a lot of attention, so were my nails, as I had a lovely lady give me a much-needed Essie manicure.

Kerastase also have a little device that can check the hair and also scalp, by magnifying. I have a sensitive scalp, which can be put down to stress, the changing weather and lots of other things, but it means that my shampoos have to be light and not high in chemicals, which the Cristalliste is, it’s free of parabens and colourants. It’s Kerastase’s first haircare range enriched with a ‘liquid light’ complex. Also perfect for hair that can get greasy at the roots, as they are beautifully cleansed, but are left feeling light and oil free. I washed my hair with the range yesterday, applied the serum only at the ends, and left my hair to dry naturally. It feels so great, I can’t stop playing with it.

Hair, Hair, Hair!

Thursday, January 5, 2012

As one of my resolutions this year was to experiment with hairstyles, me and Stavros have decided to showcase what styles we will be using as inspiration, as well as some that we just love!

Mohammed Samghabady and Annelie James for TONI&GUY

“I have tried endlessly to get my hair looking like this, but mostly it just gets matted.”

Jamie Stevens

“This style makes me want to bleach the F**k out of my hair”

Joe Mills at Lounge Soho for Collision Magazine

“This makes me what to straighten my hair to an inch of its life and whip it all over the place.”

Jody Taylor for TONI&GUY

“I love how clean-cut this is. But it won’t look this clean after a night out though.”

Sean Tetlow

“I HAVE to learn how to do this!”

Karim

“Now this is what I call a quiff!”

Which of these styles will you be using as inspiration this year?

Pretty In Pink

Monday, November 7, 2011

I love it when fashion gets a little bit rough around the edges. Over the past few years, instead of models having to be blank canvases, some are actually getting jobs because of their tattoos. Now, one model is getting picked because of her hair.

Charlotte Free is the model with the pink hair, you may have seen her at Topshop Unique, Louise Gray and Vivienne Westwood. She has a grungy, punk look to her style, energy and perfectly proportioned face. As a model who is very in demand this season, it is surprising that she is only 5 ft 7″ (I say only in model terms, not my own – I’m not even 5 ft!) which is why some people have made comparisons with Kate Moss.

The L.A. born model has even become an online social sensation, with many blogs set up in her honour. Although edgy, her beauty is quite smple and pure, which is why, I think, many designers have booked her for shows. A talent that has its unique style, but one that seems to translate into many different collections. I hope she creates as much of a buzz next season.

All this colour makes me want to jazz up my hair and I’m drawing close to the lavender option, however, placing purple in my hair would require bleaching to oblivion, praying none falls out and then applying the pretty dye on top, again praying none falls out. So searching online I found a solution.

International session stylist Kevin Murphy has created a temporary hair colour –  COLOR.BUG! It is an intense hair shadow that adds flashes of instant crazy colour without commitment: you wipe on and wash out the same day or the next morning. It’s sounds ideal for my hair and you do not have to apply all over, so I think I will attempt a few streaks underneath.

Available from professional salons nationwide, please call 01282 613413 for details.

COLOR.BUG – £12.95 each and comes in pink, orange and purple

A Week In Hair

One brand I recently discovered and now swear by when it comes to my hair is Bumble and Bumble. They have some amazing products, even if they might be a little too expensive for a student – but when have finances ever stopped me before!

Bumble and Bumble were just one of the hair teams working backstage at London Fashion Week, and I wanted to have a look at the styles they created and how to replicate them.

This look was created for JW Anderson by Shon for Bumble and Bumble. A modern futuristic look with sleek hair and a silky slim low ponytail. The products used here are Thickening Hairspray, Defrizz and Thickening Hairspray again and then finished off with Shine Spray. Easy to do, this style will help you finish off a classic outfit, or even give a modern but smart twist to usually mundane work outfit.

I love this overtly playful style. It was created for the bStore show by Lyndell for Bumble and Bumble. To create the dry texture of the style, use Bb Texture at the roots and then throughout your hair. Saturate your hair with Thickening Hairspray and also spray on Surf Spray all over before drying. Then section off your hair and braid. This look used hair extentions, but they can be left out and you will still have the dramatic effect. In the show, each model had variations of the look above – play with this style making it your own by having braids wherever you want. Pair this style with a cute little mini dress and high-heeled ankle boots to really get that edgy style. Add a leather biker jacket and you have it nailed.

Bumble and Bumble were also behind the sophisticated hairstyles at Teatum Jones. The hair was styled by Ali P for Bumble and Bumble. The look was created to compliment the silhouettes of the beautiful clothes. This style has three textures, so if you want to copy this, the best way to start is to soak your hair with Bb Prep. For the length use Shine Finishing Spray to get that glossy look. Another texture is created on the side of the head by using your fingers to seperate and create waves; use Bb Gel for hold. On the other side use Bb Texture to replicate the dry matte finish of the final texture. I know that’s a lot of texture there, but give it a try and let me know how it goes. I would wear a look like this with a maxi dress, with clean cut lines.

The next style looks very complicated to achieve but it looks so creative I had to include it.

This edgy look was created by Alex Brownsell for Bumble and Bumble for the Nasir Mazhar collection. They elaborated on each of the models own unique style, as they were all friends of Nasir. They enhanced the models individual look by using Styling Creme and Styling Lotion. Three headpieces were used and ponytails and braids were added. Each of the looks was finished off with Bb Does It All, Classic and Bb Shine On (and on). A style like this needs no comment, you know what sort of clothes are best to compliment it.

Turning on the Mid Lights

Wednesday, September 7, 2011

The first time I went to New York City I came back with a bob and blonde highlights; Mother was not pleased. I was 11 and had always had very long, natural dark brown hair and so this was the beginning of my fascination with colour. Since then I have had every shade of colour that could be interpreted as natural (no blues or pink for me) but I would have them all at once. My favourite style was black, bleach blonde and brown – again I came back with this triple threat style from New York. I had a black thick fringe and top half, big chunks of bleach blonde low lights and underneath my hair was a rich chocolate brown. I still think it looked cool. I swear.

Last year when I came back from New York I was a red head. It lasted a while, a year to be exact, because I actually loved the washed out colour more than the vibrant just been done look. And slowly I fell in love with the rich dark blonde/light brown colour it turned into. Although when I got back from Cyprus, yes my hair was lighter but it was very coppery. I didn’t want to put a dark blonde on, or even a light brown as I have bad experiences with colouring my own hair and I also loved the colour it was before and knew I couldn’t get it with dye. Searching around on the Internet I found out about the Mid Lights Lift, the new and exclusive hair treatment from Headmasters.

I visited the Hannover Street Salon and booked in with Stephanie Economou the Salon Manager. I always get a little nervous about new hair salons and stylists; are they friendly, are they too friendly, will they actually listen to what I want? Stephanie was extremely professional yet we chatted away and I knew I was in good hands. She mixed up a bespoke toner that matched my colour and also applied a colour-preserving treatment. This sounds great but the end result was perfect. It took away any cooper caused by the sun, and I was left with the colour I wanted, and it was ever so shiny and in much better condition.

Moving on to the blow dry. I myself do not actually own a blow dryer, my mother stole mine and I have never replaced it. My hair dries very quickly and I like the natural waves, however it does get very flat so a good old-fashioned blow dry is a must every now and then. Old fashioned is probably the wrong term to use here, as Headmasters design different styles each season. This season their collection consists of styles such as the Dreamy Grunge, the Glam and Groomed and also the Rock Candy. Amazing hairstyles to finish off any of this seasons trends.  I opted for the Bergdorf Belle, a full-bodied sophisticated look.

I look forward to seeing what their collection holds next season.
