MOXHAM: Wearable Construction

Saturday, November 3, 2012

MOXHAM jewellery has been on my radar for quite some time. Ever since the trend for maximalist costume jewels took over the scene I have been following the brands progression, so when I was asked to model for the current seasons lookbook, I jumped at the chance … I have to admit it is a little weird seeing an army of me, all brilliantly accessorized. But It was pretty amazing to get to try on every piece from the current collection. Last week MOXHAM put on a fashion night out with other brands such as Marina London and the invite contained a pack of stickers. Of me. Mr Allure has since stuck them all over our house. In places too high to reach. Aren’t you clever.

MOXHAM, a venture by London-based Madeleine Moxham, offers a core collection of statement accessories and jewellery, inspired by Egyptian mythology and the repetition of striking motifs. From necklaces to cuffs and leather bags, the items echo the mindset of the brand, shunning the generic in favour of oversized, constructed statement pieces for day or night.

Madeleine Moxham is the creative behind the geometric shapes, leather and unique style. Having launched in September 2011, MOXHAM is all her vision. Each piece is hand made in her studio and already in the brands short-life, it is creating quite a stir in the most fashionable of circles.

What did you do before MOXHAM started?

Trained in Fashion Design at the University of Leeds, worked for Felder Felder and Aquascutum, worked for a branding agency working with large clients such as Oakley, Carlsberg & Speedo and then did an MA at Nottingham Trent.

What was the inspiration behind MOXHAM?

I like the immediacy of jewellery and accessories – you can sit down and work with different materials and build up shapes and motifs to create pieces that vary from the wearable to the outlandish. I am not however formally trained as a jewellery designer and envisage MOXHAM being more of a lifestyle brand – we will be doing clothing and more luxury goods next year.

How would you describe the MOXHAM girl?

Not a specific age or demographic but a mindset. I can tell almost instantly if someone is going to wear our pieces. I imagine them to be a confident, creative, city dweller but I like surprises!

Who would you like to collaborate with? Which designers do you aspire to be like?

In terms of collaborations I would love to work with Aesop, Bistrotheque, YMC & Phoebe English. I love the female greats such as Phoebe Philo, Stella McCartney & Claire Waight Keller.

How have you brought the designs forward for autumn/winter 2012?

We have re-introduced some of the core pieces in new colourways and we have developed some of the larger pieces, statement pieces to really offer a collection that can work from day to night.

Do you like designing other pieces other than jewellery?

Yes – it is nice to be working on clothes again and we are looking forward to presenting the A/W13 collection in February.

What is your favourite piece that you have made?

At the moment – the APIS for day and ANUBIS or OSIRIS for night.

How would you like to see MOXHAM grow?

One step at a time – continuing to work with exciting people and in five years times offering the MOXHAM customer the whole look!

Maria Black

Thursday, April 12, 2012

My taste in jewellery has changed drastically over the last two years. I used to love big costume style pieces, but lately I am drawn to intricate and delicate jewels that are understated, yet still have something different about them. Maria Black is my latest find that ticks those boxes.

Born in Copenhagen with Irish roots, Maria Black graduated in 2009 and started her own collection in 2010. Each piece is handcrafted in her London studio and aimed at the fashion focused women who want something a little bit more playful. I think there is something so beautiful in the angular designs and their simplicity.

The collection is made up of cuffs, bracelets, studs, rings, pendent necklaces and armlets, all in gold and dark silver metals and the price range is really reasonable. Maria Black jewellery can be bought at the Wolf & Badger Boutique and also at MariaBlack.com. The latest collection is titled Cascade and will be available from May.

It’s extremely tough for me to pick favourite pieces as I love the entire collection.

What pieces stand out for you?

Make A Statement!

Around this time of year magazines and stylists big up jewellery in a festival way. TOPSHOP’s website is a flux of festival style and the jewellery we should be wearing. Thing is, I would never wear this kind of thing at the type of festivals I like to go to; I would end up loosing or breaking it! But thats just me. Apart from this though, statement pieces and jewellery collections seem to be having a bit of a thing at the moment. I’m not saying people are going around looking like a five year old who has put on their mother’s entire jewellery box, but at the moment it seems to be the bigger the better! And I’m loving it!

Usually names we hear about most from the Fashion Weeks are the Women’s Designers but more and more I am hearing, up-and-coming jewellery designer this jewellery designer that. I think it’s great that more attention is being paid where its due. So here are a collection of some of the pieces I love at the moment.

Pamela Love for TOPSHOP £50

Beautiful, yet over the top feather earings in a hippy, Native American style. I bought them for my cousins wedding, finding them in TOPSHOP’s not-so-secret store. The clothes were quite minimal and dissapointing for a concept pop up that had so much press, but the jewellery was laid out ever so nicely on silk and velvet (I had to get the sales girl to pick up everything for me – I’m affraid of velvet. Don’t judge!) Her entire collection for TOPSHOP is not to be missed. www.topshop.com

Lady Gaga wearing Maria Francesca Pepe Head Piece

Maria Francesca Pepe is a name you just keep on hearing. She designs over the top pieces that in a way become more than just jewellery, they are part of the clothes you wear. I cannot think of a better way to describe it, other than, the pieces transend the boundries of jewellery.  The websites calls it ‘Jewellery-Wear’, which is perfect. Although all the pieces are hand crafted in Italy, the concepts, ideas and business are all born and bred Landaan [London]. www.mfpepe.com

Every girl loves herself some vintage. I have these HUGE chandelier Edie Sedgwick earings I found in New York that I can only wear for about an hour or so. Don’t deny you own a similar pair. My favourite vintage inspired jewellery designer at the moment is the New York based Lulu Frost. You can now find some pieces on www.net-a-porter.com.

Lulu Frost Collage Necklace. Made from vintage brooches, brass chain, ribbon.  $840.00 (Oh dear!)

Lulu Frost Plaza Silk, Satin and Bronze Number Knecklace at a more approachable price of £290

Daisy Knights Scull Charm Bracelets £43                      Love Stud Earings £120

Not exactly over the top, but I love her collection. Had to big up the British Daisy Knights if I’m writing a piece on jewellery… Her collections are simple and elegant with a young, grunge-glam twist.  Layer them up or mix and match. Any way you want to wear them, it works. www.daisyknights.com

Coco Chanel once said, (love saying that) that before you leave your house, look in the mirror and take off one item. Well I don’t want to blaspheme but I think times have changed. Just a little. I’ve always been a lover of pretty things, having a huge collection, most of which I forget about and then get all girly and excited when I remember them.

These are my hippy bracelets. Each one holds a memory of a person, place or time. A lot of them are gifts. I love the gold chain with skull and heart charms on it. It reminds me of my time spent in New York last summer. I designed it at Brooklyn Charm a great jewellery shop in Williamsburg. You can read my article on the place here. You can also see the Daisy Knights skull bracelet I wear daily too.

Every collector, or even wearer of jewels, whether there expensive timeless classics or costume should keep them nice and tidy and look after them … well we can’t all practice what we preach!
