Just Bitten & Oh So Kissable*

Thursday, June 21, 2012

Revlon have recently launched their Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains. They are so easy to apply and look fab. I tested out three colours and found it very hard to choose my favourite.

The stain is highly pigmented, which means that the colour lasts hours and the formula leaves my lips feeling smoother. At only £7.99 each these lip pencils are sure to fly off the shelves. They have released 7 different shades and I tested out Darling, Rendezvous and Lovesick. If I had to pick one it would have to be Rendezvous.

What I love about this product is that there is no fuss. I have been able to apply them without the need of a trusty pocket mirror, and quite well I might add. These are sure to find a comfy home in my hand bag.

Available now at Boots and Revlon.com

Rendezvous

This is the brightest colour I tested, and although it has a red tint in the photos, it is quite tangerine on the lips. Which is great if you need a colour injection quickly.

Lovesick

A bright pink hue is drawn on here. I have been looking for a strong pink lip stain for a while now, after I over did red. I feel pink is just a little lighter for those summer months.

Darling

The packaging for this chubby pencil is lilac, and although the colour that comes out on the lips is a little different from the concentrate, I still think it looks great. It is more subtle than Lovesick, and is perfect for a less polished look.

Testing, One Two Three

Friday, May 11, 2012

Over the past couple of weeks, I have been testing out quite a few beauty products. Some are brand spanking new, while others are old heroes. If you’re looking to try something new, whether it’s skincare, make-up or body products, have a little read and you might just be inspired.

Elizabeth Arden Intervene 3-in-1 Daily Cleanser Exfoliator Primer
Temple Spa Go Figure
Mavala Lipstick in Fatal Red*
By Terry Serum Terrybly Sunbooster*
L’Oreal Lumi Magique Pure Light Primer*
L’Oreal Nude Magique BB Cream*
Sophyto ph Optimizing Restorative Toner*

I’ve gotten into the habit of trying something new and so when something from my skincare routine runs out I always like to try something new, before I replenish the old. I ran out of scrub this week and went to buy some but got distracted by the amount of free gifts flying about in Debenhams. Elizabeth Arden were giving away 5 different sized products when you bought 2, so I finally remembered to buy the 8 Hour Cream. With that I got to choose 5 out of 8 or 9 different products to take home. One being Intervene 3-in-1 daily cleanser exfoliator and primer. It works like most scrubs in that you lather with water and rinse off. It has tini-tiny exfoliating beads that I find very effective. Usually I like a good hearty scrub, one with big beads, so I feel thoroughly clean after, but this multi-use product does just that. Leaving my skin prepped, primed and ready for the day. Elizabeth Arden Intervene 3-in-1 Cleanser Exfoliator Primer £24 for 200ml

Temple Spa is a brand I was introduced to through my old work. It’s a spa and wellbeing brand, one I think doesn’t get enough attention. They have a lot of different products and although some are overpriced and a little naff, they do have some amazing ones such as Go Figure. An anti-cellulite and slimming gel it contains the clever Iso-slim complex as well as menthol and green tea, which invigorates the skin. It is absorbed quickly and leaves skin, touchable colder while it tingles. The ingredients encourage fat-breakdown and limits the dips and bumps caused by cellulite. I rub it onto my upper-thighs and tummy after every shower and I can visably see a difference, especially on my legs. My cellulite has reduced slightly but mostly I have skinnier thighs. I have been using it for about two weeks, but started to see results after one. Temple Spa Go Figure £25

Mavala is well-known for their cute little nail polishes, but next month they are launching their way into the lip world here in the UK. June will see the release of lipsticks as well as glosses. I have been wearing the lipstick in Fatal Red ever since I got my hands on one. It’s a strong, pigmented bright red with a satin-finish, that glides on smoothly and has great staying power. As well as being moisturising. What I love most about it is that the colour on my lips is exactly the same colour as the concentrate, no misleading shades here. Mavala Lipsticks will be out in June

By Terry is a brand I had heard of, but never really tried until the Space NK blogger event a few weeks ago. Since then I have been trying the Serum Terrybly Sunbooster an Auto-Radiant Intensive Moisturiser that gives my dull looking, pale skin (thank you weeks of rain) a natural glow without DHA. Not only does it give my skin a glowing boost, but it has anti-aging properties too. The formula is enriched with biotechnological active ingredients that deeply irrigate the epidermis, correcting and smoothing the skin’s texture without coverage and colour, all of which leave my skin ultra supple. By Terry Serum Terrybly Sunbooster £65

L’Oreal’s latest range, The Magique Collection contains everything you need to get illuminating skin. I have been trying the Pure Light Primer and BB Cream. I personally don’t use them both on the same day, but others might. I love a good primer and this one really does do what it sets out to achieve. It’s silky texture glides on to the skin and is absorbed quite quickly, leaving a dewy look. When my skin is looking dull, this is the best thing for it and because the finish looks so good, I try not to wear foundation on top, although when you apply foundation (a powder base foundation, haven’t tried liquid) it still shines through. Being a BB virgin, I couldn’t wait to try the Nude Magique BB Cream. It comes out like a white liquid, but when you rub over your face you can feel little beads that start to work their magic and gives great coverage. I love the way it makes my skin look brighter and it completely covers any redness from blemishes. I do find this formula is quite thick so I try not to wear it daily, but on those pesky break-out days, this is genius. L’Oreal Lumi Magique Pure Light Primer £9.99

L’Oreal Nude Magique BB Cream £9.99

Last week I also ran out of toner, so when I came across Sophyto’s ph Optimizing Restorative Toner I had to give it ago. As I have said before, I hate toners that dry out your skin, so ones that are made up of plant extracts and not chemical after chemical are more likely to nourish skin, instead of dry it. This toner contains shitake fruit and elderberry extract that help neutralize impurities. It leaves my skin feeling clean and very soft. Me likey. Sophyto ph Otimizing Restorative Toner £9.79

Guerlain Shine Automatique*

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

Sometimes you don’t want a colour that too bold or drastic, instead you fancy a slight shade of something with a lot of gloss, and this is exactly what Guerlain’s newest lipstick can do for you.

This hydrating lip shine comes in 12 different shades, from oranges, beige, pinks and reds. The new formula uses crystal pigments that allows the lipsticks to be translucent and glossy, not opaque. The fine texture seeps in so that the lips are moisturised to the max.  They can be worn during the day as they can be subtle, but if you apply a few coats, the shine increases and they look even better. They are the perfect lipsticks for a vintage glam look.

If you get excited over products the same way I do, you’ll be playing with the flick applicator for hours.

Extrait De Rose 262

This is the colour I was drawn to most, it’s a fun and girly bright pink. Here I have applied a few layers to show the strong pigments, but if you only apply one, it can look more subtle and add a bit more ‘pop’ to your beauty look.

Rose Pompon 264

This is a more natural pink, it’s quite subtle but really helps to brighten up my face. If I want to look smart, but still have some colour this is the shade I’ll choose.

 Sous Le Vent 200

Sous Le Vent is from the beige family and is extremely natural looking. It helps to achieve a more polished look. If you pair this sophisticated shade with a dark, smokey eye you end up with a really sexy look. I really recommend you try it.

Guerlian Shine Automatique Hydrating Lip Shines cost £24.50 and were released only 2 days ago. Available at Harrods, Debenhams and House of Fraser

bareMinerals Gets Ready*

Sunday, April 1, 2012

bareMinerals are at the forefront of the mineral make-up industry, and also my beauty regime. After falling in love with their foundation, I have been keeping up with the brand and their latest products. Today sees the launch of their Ready Collection. It’s an innovative new concept of solid mineral technology.

They have taken their fabulous products and transformed them into solid palettes making it even easier to look and feel good. The collection contains Ready Eyeshadow Duos and Quads, The Ready Touch Up Veil, Ready Bronzer and also Blush. This weekend I’ve been testing out a few of the products…

bareMinerals Ready Blush in The Indecent Proposal, £26

The bareMinerals Ready Blush comes in 10 different shades. The Indecent Proposal is a deep shade of plum that lasted hours. The cute and soft brush applicator made it very easy to apply the vibrant colour. It has a satin-like finish which is perfect for the day, and just like the rest of their products its very buildable, meaning that for the night-time, just add a little extra to get that sexy glamour.

bareMinerals Ready Eyeshadow Quad The Soundtrack, £29

The Soundtrack palette is a quad of dusty shades. Rythym is a base colour of light cream, Remix is a pale gold, Louder is a deep bronze and Speaker Box is shimmery dark brown for the outer corner of the eye, that adds that desirable drama.

bareMinerals are just as much about the teaching application of their products as they are about the mineral make up itself, and so in keeping with their philosophy, each palette provides a step-by-step key on how to apply the colours together for both a day and night look – it proved very helpful!

bareMinerals Ready Duo The Showstopper, £19

The bareMinerals Ready Eyeshadows come in 22 different duos. The Showstopper contains Bravo, a pale blue and Encore, a violet. They are so smooth, they glide on easily and feel almost cream-like. These two colours look amazing together and lasted for hours.

As you can see, both have a lot of shimmer to them, making my eyes really stand out. I have very dark brown eyes, but this duo would look even better with blue eyes!

Will you be trying the bareMinerals Ready Collection?

Glossy Box – Feb

Friday, March 2, 2012

I know it’s a little late, but oh well, better late than never. When I came back from our little trip, I had one of those pesky post office leaflets saying “we tried to post you something, blah blah blah,” – I could start a collection. But anyway, knowing it was the February edition of Glossy Box, I was excited to see what would be waiting for me. I have to say, I was a little disappointed this month.

Inside February’s box:
Duwop Venom Gloss
Impress Press-on Manicure
Paul Mitchell Quick Slip
BM Beauty Pure Mineral Eyeshadow
Como Shambhala Invigorate Shower Gel

The Duwop Venom Gloss is a great colour and it has that tingle effect that is supposed to increase lip voluptuousness. Mostly it just tingles and smells nice.

I have never been a fan of stick on nails, and the set that I received are not exactly the style I would wear, but they are the first set of press-ons, that have a nail small enough for my little finger. Props for that! It says they should last for a week, well we’ll see about that.

The Paul Mitchell Quick Slip comes in a badly designed and manufactured package. It’s label is cheap and wonky, as well as having a huge bulge where they have hidden the directions of use. It smells exactly like a hairdressers and instead of providing a soft, flexible hold it just added a little shine and good old grease. I’m not the biggest fan of styling creams.

The BM Beauty Mineral Eyeshadow I received was their Wolf Howl shade. It’s a deep violet and can be applied evenly; it even lasted for a good few hours before it started to crease like most mineral shadows.

The Como Shambhala Shower Gel I have yet to test as I like to save all the samples perfect for travelling to one side. It does however smell extremely refreshing, like it would be the perfect shower gel to use in the morning – it will wake you up with an invigorating kick.

Yesterday Glossy Box announced that the March box is a Harrods exclusive and will have five beauty samples of products that are only available at the gorgeous department store. I’m sure this box won’t disappoint. The box should arrive just in time for my birthday – how did they know I like Harrods!

Joli Rouge*

Monday, February 27, 2012

When it comes to lipstick, I have always been a MAC girl. But I’m also the kind of girl that likes to try new things, so to carry on my Spring beauty reviews after a lapse of Fashion Week madness, I have tested out Clarins new Joli Rouge colours Baby Pink and Poppy Red – two new shades of Clarins deeply moisturising and colour-rich signature lipstick.

I tend to only wear lipstick in the evening, but this has all changed since being introduced to these little ladies. The first thing I notice about the duo, is how easily they are applied; with other lipsticks I use a brush, but said brush is not needed here. The moisturising element really does make my lips softer. I had to remind myself they were lipstick, and not lip balm!

 Baby Pink

This pink hue is perfect for adding a little more colour in the day. I love the slight sparkle and how understated it is. I did however find that it needed re-applying a little more than the Poppy Red.

Poppy Red

This red has a slight pinkish tone, so I found it to be more girly than the reds I usually go for. Saying that, with a little dab, I was left with a dewy red that had great staying power.

After using the lipsticks, the next day my lips felt oh so soft thanks to the mango butter, a collagen-boosting tripeptide, pro-ceramides and vitamin E, that are all found in the formula. I will definitely be thinking of Clarins for lipsticks from now on.

Écrin 4 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette*

Friday, February 17, 2012

I have become a little obsessed with palettes recently. Before my make-up bag would be full of little pots of colour, but as I have become more aware when it comes to beauty and the products that help achieve it, I have turned a blind eye to the little pots of my teenage years and realized that even if you need to save a little more, palettes are the only way.

Guerlain have released two this Spring – Les Roses and Les Aqua in their Les Roses et le Noir Collection. Les Roses is a girly dream; frosted hues of pink, raspberry and violet. What caught my attention was Las Aqua. With this palette, it might not be your typical Spring colours, as its shades could easily fit into an Autumn collection, but their rich tones are beautiful none the less.

Kept safely inside the gold exterior are four shades from the aquatic family. A silver shimmer, a turquoise and light royal blue, both with extra glimmer and my favourite, a matte navy. All four slide on easily and the triangular applicator helps with creating sophisticated lines. After wearing the shadow for a day, there were no creases, which is a gives this palette a huge advantage over others.

As you can see the shimmer and the turquoise are quite light and would blend nicely together and the navy works perfectly for a smouldering smokey eye – it’s sure to become one of my go-to shades. Les Aqua is a palette most certainly made for the night – I’m guessing that’s the ‘le noir’ part of the collection.

Guerlain’s Écrin 4 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette in Les Aqua is £37 and is available from Debenhams or Harrods.

Cabana Glama*

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

The first of my Spring beauty product reviews, I’m looking at Cabana Glama from Benefit. Another of their masterful all-in-one sets, this tropical themed product is set to be a Summer favourite.

Inside the kit you can find miniature versions of Some Kind-a Gorgeous in medium and Posietint as well as Hoola, a bronzing brush, an eyeshadow palette featuring the shades Peach Fizz, Bronze Buzz and Cocoa Pizzazz as well as a double-ended sponge applicator.

I’ve been a big fan of Posietint as I find the peachy colour suits my skin tone much more than Benetint. It can come out a little thick so make sure you smooth it into your cheeks well. It also looks great on the lips, for a little bit of glamour during the day. The Some Kind-a Gorgeous is described as the foundation faker. I have never used it before but its creamy texture has me applying it to any available bare patch on my face. It’s not too thick, which is great, but if this product is meant to be applied all over, I don’t think this miniature size will do the trick for very long.

The eyeshadow palette features shades that are perfect for the Summer – I’m not too sure if I’ll be jetting off anywhere this year, but if I do, this will surely be packed into my suitcase.

What I love most about the product is the little leaflet inside, which I usually throw straight in the bin, but just like all Benefit products, its theme shines through and you are introduced to the products and how to apply them in a postcard fashion.

Do you like the sound of Caban Glama? Will you be putting it on your Spring beauty wish list?

Murad Hybrids Skin Perfecting Primer – Glossy Box

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

Last week I joined the beauty box revolution and subscribed to receive a beautifully packaged, joyfully filled Glossy Box. If you aren’t aware of the concept, here’s a little insight. Last year with the explosion of beauty blogs reaching record numbers, industry men and women realised that beauty lovers, not just beauty bloggers, enjoy trying new products too, but sometimes getting hold of beauty samples can be time consuming and expensive, so the beauty box was invented.

There are quite a few now that carry the same manifesto, but the service is relatively the same. You join up and pay around £10 a month (plus p+p) to get lovely new product samples sent to your door. Other companies include Carmine and She Said Beauty, but after careful consideration – looking at the brands connected to each company – I chose Glossy Box.

These are the contents of my first box. I received (as I beleive each box is slightly different) a Murad Hybrids Skin Perfecting Primer – Dewy, Fab’s Body Moisturizer, a Eyeko Skinny Eyeliner in Green and samples of Clarins Extra Firming Day and Night Cream. I’m saving the Clarins and Fab samples for my trip to Paris next weekend so I have put them to one side to stop temptation, but the Murad Primer I fell for as soon as I tested it out on my hand.

I am now a lady who owns foundation, however, I have to admit there is still a pause when I sit in front of my mirror and attempt to put it on. Sometimes my old habit of ‘can I really be bothered’ comes over me and I give up and just apply some mascara, but now I can still be lazy and have skin that isn’t blotchy and dull. The Murad Hybrids Skin Perfecting Primer slides on evenly and gives my skin a quick fix in the lumination department. I like the slight cover it gives me; it isn’t much, so concealer still may be needed on problematic skin. It’s silky smooth texture is the right density against my skin.

I was ultimately worried that I would pay the £12.95 (£10 plus p+p) and be dissapointed with its Glossy contents, but after introducing me to a new love the first box round, I can safely say I am already looking forward to next months package.

It’s All About The (eye)Brows*

Monday, January 30, 2012

Ever since I saw Sienna Miller strutting her stuff with a pixie cut and full eyebrows, playing the oh-so-fabulous Edie Sedgewick, I have been a little obsessed. I fell in love with the difficult stray hair above the eye. Watching Factory Girl inspired me to grow mine, and two thick eyebrows have been permently fixed upon my face.

The eyebrow has the strength to change your face shape completely – it should never be over looked, and it certainly wasn’t on the Spring/Summer 2012 ready-to-wear shows. The beauty this season, just like the clothes, is playful and pretty. A strong eyebrow doesn’t always deem androgyny. Perfectly brushed-up brows were seen at The Row and Derek Lam, and they never looked more girly.

Caroline Frazer, a celebrity make-up artist told me the best way to keep your eyebrows groomed…

“Brows are big news for Spring/Summer. Spending a little time on getting the right shape and grooming your brows can result in a polished and lifting effect on the face.”

“Always pluck brows in natural daylight and use a large mirror and don’t rush! Start by brushing your brows in an upward direction so you can see where the hairs naturally lie and also check out the length.”

“Always tweeze from underneath the brow and only ever pluck one hair at a time and in the direction of growth following the natural line. Don’t pluck from above the brow – just use some small grooming scissors to carefully trim these.”

There are an abundance of products out there to help you with your brow confidence. We’ve come a long way since the shave-off and pencil job, but scarily there is talk of a Scouse Brow! These products will help you steer clear of any northern confusion, and aid you in getting the perfect eyebrow…

Benefit’s Browzings (£22.50) is a great shaping kit to keep in your make-up bag. The compact mirror allows you to touch up on the road. What I love most about this product, is the fact that you get a pair on itsy-bitsy tweezers. The coloured wax helps you to groom all those little hairs into place, and the mini hard angle brush will make getting the arch, an easy job. Once in place, you can use the blending brush to apply the shadow and fill in any bald patches. I found the kit very easy to use, but I had to apply the powder on quite thick to get the full look.

The Smashbox Browtech Trio (£18.50) is also a great little product. It contains two shades of colour so you can match it to the brow, and the wax helps you to seal the hairs into place. I found that the colourless wax was much easier to use, as you could apply a little more vigorously, and not have to worry about having uneven brows.

The Browtech doesn’t come with a brush, but when testing it out, I used the Laura Mercier Brow Definer (£22.50) which although is a little pricey, you can see the difference in application. The bristles are super soft, and the point is the right shape, which made is very easy to push all my little hairs into the high arch.

Another brush and pot duo that I tested out was by bareMinerals. Their Brow Colour (£11) is a mineral powder, that glides on easily, but you need a little layering to get the right colour match and fullness.

The bareMinerals Brow brush (£10) is made from pony hair, which makes it a lot courser then other brushes, but the effect works brilliantly with their powder.

The quickest way to a fuller looking brow is the pencil, but it doesn’t always have the best results. Personally I prefer powders to pencils as they have a more natural effect. One pencil, however, that does do the trick is Mac Eye Brows (£11.50). The thin tip allows you to fill in the smallest of gaps and gives a very natural looking brow.

One product I just couldn’t get used to was the eyebrow pen. Think felt-tip. I tested out Stila All Day Waterproof Brow Colour (£13.50), and I have to say it is the better of the eyebrow pens, but I still couldn’t get the angles or the fullness I wanted. Staying true to it’s name, it was long-lasting.

One product that I found ridiculous was the La La 24 Semi Permanent Brow Pen by La La Lashes (£12.20). The nib is much too thick and not flexible enough to get any precision, and it does leave you looking like a 2 year old applied your make-up, with a felt-tip pen. As much as I like La La’s Lashes, the pen I did not.

If you have a thin brow and just can’t seem to get the look you want with pencils or powders, RapidBrow (£37) is the latest product said to help, from the makers of the award winning lash serum RapidLash. It is said to condition, restore and repair the appearance of your eyebrows in 60 days. I have been applying it for a week and a half now and am yet to see results, but I’ll keep you posted.
